The Challange
Creating a unique product in response to customer needs
The Outcome
Designing a product collection to create a new user experience
All interior spaces in a home can create either pleasant or unpleasant feelings based on their functionality. For example, an efficient and aesthetically pleasing kitchen that caters to the user’s needs plays a significant role in enhancing people’s quality of life. Similarly, comfortable furniture designed based on the user’s culture and lifestyle experience can make a difference. In the Belsino project, the MAKH team’s goal was to design bedroom furniture that caters to user needs and creates new experiences.
Design Resources
During the ideation process, it is crucial to provide a solution that addresses the “real problem”. In other words, we must ensure that the problem statement and user needs are genuine. To ensure that our solutions and ideas align with customer needs, we initiated the ideation process based on research and the root causes of defined problems. One of the most important sources of data that entered the ideation team was the root causes of customer needs obtained from user empathy and problem definition phases. These roots represent the real user experiences while using bedroom furniture.
- At what times of the day, in what moods, and what different experiences does the user have with the furniture?
- What needs does the user have that have not been previously addressed?
To better understand the user experience while using the product, questions like these were raised. When discussing the user’s experience and the process of using the product, attention must be paid to the smallest details.
- During the use of the product, what physical and emotional interactions does the user have?
All these details are crucial in designing an effective product. A product cannot be designed without considering the customer’s experience and needs.
We realized that contemporary lifestyles have transformed bedrooms from just places of rest and relaxation to spaces where work, conversation, and leisure activities occur. Adapting to these changes in people’s lifestyles requires creating new experiences and responding to their new needs. Therefore, one of the most important sources of inspiration and design for the ideation team is the behavioral study and user experience.
Therefore, enjoying the user experience of the product can be related to its “inner design”.
Products Relations
In the process of designing related products that are used in one space by the user, special importance must be given to the relationships between products. In a collection of bedroom furniture, products such as beds, study desks, dressing tables, mirrors, and drawers were studied and designed as primary products. Creating a unique experience based on today’s lifestyle not only depends on attention to an individual product but also on the relationships between products. Designing a single product is different from designing a product collection. In designing a product collection, in addition to the points that need to be considered in the design of individual products, the connections between products and the experiences that users gain from using all products must also be taken into account.
The MAKH design team concluded that formal and stylistic relations between products are fundamental in the design of the collection. Beyond these relations, the effectiveness of products in terms of functionality and enhancing the overall room experience is also important.
In other words, we reached two types of experience design by furniture:
One focuses on the experience created by individual products and the other on creating an experience through the interplay of different products (a collection of related products). The second type of experience leads to a doubly effective user experience when using the bedroom. Therefore, it is crucial for design not only to function as a single product but also to enable the creation of connections and the development of new behaviors between different products.
Conclusion
Considering the change in people’s lifestyle, giving importance to the needs and desires of users and designing based on them, leads to the creation of new experiences. Innovation and creativity in design go beyond mere novelty in form. While the user is initially attracted to the product’s form, it is the enjoyable and correct experience it provides during use that leads to deeper and more enduring satisfaction. Creating a creative and unique product should happen both on the outside and the inside simultaneously. Form and proportions provide external beauty, and a pleasant and enjoyable user experience leads to the creation of inner beauty. What makes a product more enduring is the beauty inside, or the pleasant experience of using the product. Therefore, enjoying the user experience of the product can be related to its “inner design”.
